A user on Quizlet, an online learning platform, created a public flashcard set in February that appears to have exposed highly confidential information about security procedures in US Customs and Border Protection facilities around Kingsville, Texas. The Quizlet set, titled “USBP Review,” was available to the public until March 20, when it was made private less than half an hour after WIRED messaged a phone number potentially linked to the Quizlet user. Though an individual with the user’s name was listed at an address of an apartment less than a mile from a Kingsville CBP facility, WIRED has not been able…
Cash App, the peer-to-peer fintech app owned by Jack Dorsey’s Block, has launched a new “pay-over-time” deferred payment feature that allows eligible users to pay for their everyday transfers over an extended period of time. Companies have increasingly offered deferred payments for relatively mundane and everyday purchases. About a year ago, DoorDash partnered with Klarna — allowing users to “micro-finance” their food orders (the partnership notably inspired a flurry of online jokes about “burrito debt” and late capitalism). Cash App’s new feature clearly builds on this trend — expanding flexible financing into the P2P payment realm. To take advantage of…
Startups are often quick to say they value diversity but are slow to implement hiring practices that reflect that. It is the path of least resistance for a growth-stage company to hire from the familiar Silicon Valley pipelines, but if a founder wants a diverse team, that value has to be put into practice from the very first hire. Leah Solivan, the founder of Taskrabbit and founder and managing director of Precedent.VC, joined Isabelle Johannessen on Build Mode to discuss how she thought about hiring while leading Taskrabbit. As the company scaled from being bootstrapped on Solivan’s personal credit cards…
Leveraging meal kit coupons is the extreme couponing of our times—a capitalism hack-a-thon right up there with trial yoga classes and attempting to cancel your Adobe subscription. Meal kits like HelloFresh have always been a better deal than they get credit for, even at full price: It’s actually hard to recreate meal kit meals for less than you can get the recipes delivered to your home. But it’s especially worth it when you can find a HelloFresh coupon, promo code, or discount at more than half off.I’ll admit I wasn’t that sold on HelloFresh when I first tried it most…
Commonwealth Fusion Systems said on Thursday it would sell high-temperature superconducting magnets to Realta Fusion, the second in a string of deals that suggests the company will lean heavily on its magnet technology in the coming years to bring in much-needed revenue. “It’s the largest deal of this kind to date for CFS,” Rick Needham, the company’s chief commercial officer, told reporters on a call. Commonwealth Fusion Systems, or CFS, previously sold magnets to the WHAM experiment at the University of Wisconsin, with which fusion startup Realta collaborates closely. The physics behind WHAM underpins Realta’s approach to fusion power, which…
Since launching as a direct-to-consumer furniture brand in 2013, Castlery has built a reputation for design-forward products that look good and perform even better. Castlery’s aesthetic leans mid-century modern, favoring earthy tones, rounded edges, and natural wood finishes that outlast fleeting trends. But it’s the functionality that won WIRED over. Think: Hidden storage compartments, modular layouts, multi-functional pieces, and performance fabrics that can withstand everyday use. We also care about sustainability, and Castlery’s furniture is made to last. Many products are responsibly sourced and safe from heavy metals, allergenic dyes, and other harmful chemicals. You can read more about the…
The acting head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement told lawmakers that it has bought and used spyware made by Paragon Solutions in drug trafficking cases, according to a letter seen by TechCrunch. ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons wrote in the letter to three congresspeople that he approved the agency’s criminal investigative unit Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) to use “cutting-edge technological tools” to counter “foreign terrorist organizations’ thriving exploitation of encrypted communication platforms,” in a reference to spyware. Law enforcement’s inability to access encrypted data has often been cited as a justification for their need to use computer and cellphone…
In terms of staying true to the intent of what the iPad has always been, the iPad Air reigns supreme. Even the M4 in the iPad Air is a bit overkill for what the vast majority of people will use an iPad for. You don’t need a chip that powerful to browse the web, do FaceTime calls, play Apple Arcade games, or try your hand at drawing in Adobe Illustrator. You’ll never feel the M4 iPad Air slow down in any of those tasks, and there’s still plenty of headroom for more. The 12 GB of unified memory (up from 8…
Google on Thursday added new features to its video editor app Vids, including directing and customizing avatars through text prompts, Veo 3.1 support, the ability to export videos to YouTube, and recording with a Chrome extension. Users will be able to use natural language prompts to direct avatars to “act” in a scene. This can include the avatar interacting with a product, a prop, or a piece of equipment. The company said that despite the dynamic nature of the output, Vids maintains character consistency. Google said that based on the theme of the video, users can customize characters by tweaking…
Buying inquiries are way up at iDrive1 Motors in Carrollton, Texas, where owner Dink Davis has specialized in used electric vehicles for a decade. Gas prices aren’t nearly as high in the Lone Star State as they are in other parts of the US, after the Iran war and the ensuing crisis in the Strait of Hormuz spiked global oil costs in late February. Compare the average $3.68 per gallon in Texas to California’s $5.89. But AAA says prices are up nationally more than a third since the start of the conflict. Davis and his three employees—in the business of…
Voice AI company ElevenLabs has quietly released an iOS app called ElevenMusic that can be used to create music with AI and discover AI-generated music in order to compete with platforms like Suno and Udio. The new app, which was listed on the App Store for a few weeks and finally released on April 1, suggests ElevenLabs wants to be more than just a voice model company. The company sees tools that use AI to create music and other mediums as a way to grow and protect itself from the eventual commoditization of AI audio models. ElevenMusic is currently free…
About seven hours into the flight of Artemis II, Commander Reid Wiseman experienced something many earthbound Microsoft users know all too well: his Outlook email stopped working.Speaking with mission control in Houston, Commander Wiseman can be heard saying that he had “two Microsoft Outlooks [on his PCD], and neither one of those are working.” PCD stands for “Personal Computing Device”, which are specialized laptops or tablets, used by the Artemis astronauts to manage certain tasks, including accessing email clients, during the 10-day mission to the moon. PCDs are crucial for the four-person crew to interact with mission data and communicate…
Flipboard on Thursday announced social websites, a new way for creators and publishers to build their own spaces on the web. These social websites are built around conversations already taking place across the open social web, which includes decentralized platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky, as well as other public web content. Social websites bring together social posts, videos, podcasts, newsletters, and other conversations into a single destination that creators control, Flipboard says. You can consolidate profiles and posts from Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, YouTube, podcasts, blogs, and RSS feeds into a single destination. Flipboard sees social websites as a new model…
Into the second month of the US-Iran war, the conflict in the Gulf continues to escalate—airstrikes widening, oil markets reacting, and pressure mounting around the Strait of Hormuz. But beyond the immediate security and economic concerns, another question is quietly taking shape: What actually happens if a nuclear site is hit?In most cases, even if a nuclear facility is hit, a large-scale radiological disaster is unlikely. Modern sites are designed with multiple safety systems that can shut down reactors and contain damage. The risk isn’t defined by the strike itself, but by what the strike damages inside the facility. The risk…
Gateway Capital Partners, the venture firm founded by Dana Guthrie, announced the first close for its $25 million target Fund II earlier this week, the Milwaukee-based firm told TechCrunch. Gateway Capital declined to share the exact amount of the first close. The first close means Fund II can begin its investment operations. Guthrie said the firm began raising its Fund II in the middle of last year. Fund II’s average check size will be between $500,000 and $600,000. It will be industry-agnostic, she said, though it will have “a bias toward Midwest industries that are ripe for disruption,” such as…
