The design students didn’t start out in the field or on a hunting range. “You start in your Adobe suite, right?” Thompson says. “ Go right in digitally, create it, print it, make uniforms out of it. Tweak, tweak, tweak, tweak, tweak.” It was a lot of guesswork. There wasn’t really a reliable measurement for testing the effectiveness of camo. “ The human eye and the user and the guy in the field know what’s good or bad, but to make that be a test that you could replicate across different forces would be very, very hard,” Thompson says. And yet, Crye Precision…
With an overflowing war chest from its $5 billion raise that closed last month (not to mention billions in revenue), Databricks is acquiring. The company, best known for its cloud data analytics platform, announced on Tuesday that it was launching a new security product called Lakewatch. Lakewatch takes Databricks’ ability to store massive amounts of data and performs classic Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tasks, like detecting and investigating threats. Only it does so with the help of AI agents powered by Anthropic’s Claude. Databricks bought two startups to underpin this new product: Antimatter, in an undisclosed-until-now deal that…
Since Donald Trump’s war on Iran started more than three weeks ago, United States military forces have allegedly attacked more than 9,000 sites, creating a climate of fear and constant uncertainty for Iranians in Tehran and across the country. Without an advanced warning system from the government, and amid the longest internet shutdown in Iran’s history, Iranians are left in an information void.Even before Israel and the United States began dropping bombs, Iran’s lack of a public emergency alert tool and severe state-controlled digital oppression has impacted tens of millions of citizens. Since the 12-day Israel-Iran war last year, though,…
Accel and Prosus have selected six startups for their first joint cohort in India, backing what they describe as “off-the-map” ideas — companies working on problems where markets are undefined and progress is difficult to measure. The inaugural cohort spans healthcare, climate, space, and longevity, reflecting a focus on science-led themes with long development timelines and uncertain commercial pathways. The six startups were selected from more than 2,000 applications. These are the selected startups: Praan is developing air infrastructure systems to improve indoor air quality using purification, sensing, and automated controls. The Mumbai-based startup has previously raised funding from investors…
After a relatively quiet few months, Amazon is bringing back another of its famously invented shopping holidays. The Amazon Spring Sale is on its third year, and it’s on now through March 31. Like during last year’s event, Amazon is promising customers thousands of deals across various daily, themed categories.Of course, as we’ve seen in the past with Prime Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, the true discounts on good products will likely be buried among junk deals on shoddy wares. The WIRED Reviews team tests gear all year long, and we fact-checked discounts on the products we actively recommend…
OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it is shutting down Sora, a TikTok-like social app that launched six months ago. OpenAI did not give a reason for the shut down, nor did it share information about when it will officially be discontinued. When Sora first opened up as an invite-only social network, it seemed like everyone was clamoring for an invite. But like Meta’s Horizon Worlds — the company’s virtual reality social platform — which is also in turmoil despite once being central to the company’s infamous metaverse, Sora didn’t have real staying power. Though the underlying Sora 2 video- and…
As the world electrifies, the oil and gas industry is counting on plastics to drive profits in the future. But not if Jacob Nathan has anything to say about it. Nathan started searching for a way to break down plastics when he was still in high school. Now, as founder and CEO of Epoch Biodesign, he has found a way to use a series of enzymes to “transform this unnatural waste” into a form ready to make more plastic, he told TechCrunch. “For us, a bale of textile is the equivalent of a barrel of oil,” Nathan said, meaning that…

Kleiner Perkins, the prominent U.S. venture firm, announced on Tuesday that it raised $3.5 billion in fresh capital across two funds, a significant increase from the firm’s $2 billion fundraise less than two years ago. The firm, founded back in 1972, says it raised $1 billion for its 22nd early-stage venture fund, and $2.5 billion for a separate vehicle designed to fund late-stage growth businesses. The much larger capital haul is not a surprise. Over the last few years, Kleiner Perkins has managed to secure early stakes in a number of fast-growing AI startups, including Together AI, Harvey, and OpenEvidence.…
Amazon has confirmed that it has acquired Fauna Robotics, a two-year-old startup founded by former Meta and Google engineers who are developing kid-size humanoid robots. The acquisition was first reported by Bloomberg. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. What we do know is that Fauna’s employees, including its two founders, will join Amazon in New York City. “We are excited about Fauna’s vision to build capable, safe, and fun robots for everyone,” an Amazon spokesperson wrote in an emailed statement. “Together with Amazon’s robotics expertise and decades of experience earning customer trust in the home through our retail and devices…

When I speak to Blake Resnick, he’s walking around his drone startup’s newest office space in Seattle—a cavernous 50,000-square-foot facility that, Resnick estimates, won’t be fully set up until later in the year—potentially November. Still, the big (and for now, largely empty) building offers the promise of a fast-growing company intent on conquering its particular industry. The industry in question is public safety and the startup is Brinc, which sells drones to police and public agencies across the U.S. The company wants to be the “DJI of the West,” as Resnick has put it—a nod to the Chinese drone manufacturer…
The main takeawayYahoo used its 2026 NewFronts event to position itself as an AI-first media and advertising platform and unveiled Yahoo Scout, a new AI intelligence layer designed to turn first-party intent data from search, mail, and content into useful data for advertisers. The biggest announcementsThe centerpiece of Yahoo’s presentation was Yahoo Scout, an AI answer engine and intelligence platform now in beta in the U.S. The company is embedding Scout across its entire product portfolio, including mail, finance, and sports, to deepen audience signals and, in theory, give advertisers a richer view of consumer intent than traditional targeting allows. On the…
A jury in Santa Fe on Tuesday ordered Meta to pay $375 million in civil penalties after finding the company misled consumers about the safety of its platforms and endangered children. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez’s office called the decision a “watershed moment for every parent concerned about what could happen to their kids when they go online,” according to a press release issued right after the ruling. The verdict, reached after a six-week trial, found Meta liable on both claims brought by the state under its Unfair Practices Act. At $5,000 per violation — the maximum allowed under…
On March 2, the town of Carroll, New Hampshire, population 820, received a $122,515 wire transfer from the Department of Homeland Security, making it among the first wave of local governments reaping the financial benefits of the Trump administration’s efforts to build out a network of local officers assisting in federal immigration enforcement.Four months before the payment, the town had signed up as part of DHS’s “Task Force Model,” which is part of the department’s so-called 287(g) program. By signing up, Caroll’s police department essentially pledged that its officers would aid in federal immigration enforcement at the direction of Immigration…
Meta has announced a slate of new retail media and creator-focused tools at Shoptalk, aimed at scooping up more ad dollars funneling through retail media networks and the creator economy.ADWEEK first reported that the social media giant was testing a new tool called “product set optimization” earlier this month. With today’s announcement, Meta has confirmed that the tool, which lets retailers improve ad performance around a specific set of SKUs, is currently in testing. Media and measurement firm Ovative Group has been testing the tool, describing it as a “win-win” across retail media clients. Meta’s product set optimization unlocks “stronger…
