Federal immigration officers have been seen at several U.S. airports on Monday after the Trump administration said it would deploy ICE agents to ease security lines amid an ongoing partial government shutdown. The shutdown, which began on February 14, has resulted in long lines at airport pre-gate security checkpoints, typically handled by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents. Since the shutdown, hundreds of thousands of agents under the Department of Homeland Security, including TSA, have worked without pay since Congress failed to pass new funding.  Democrats are calling for changes to federal immigration operations after reports of abuse by agents, including…

In Gaza, registering a death was once—as in most places around the world—a relatively simple administrative task. A body was brought to a hospital, where medical staff issued the necessary paperwork with the civil authorities. This allowed families to update civil records, settle inheritance matters, access bank accounts, apply for assistance, or secure legal guardianship of children. But amid heavy Israeli bombardment, detention of untold Palestinians, and repeated mass displacement, this all changed. Since October 2023, the systems that identify bodies, record deaths, and settle accounts have been pushed toward collapse. “It is an unfolding legal crisis,” said Ahmed Masoud, head…

Other governments have taken notice of the privacy implications of wearables like Meta’s glasses, raising concerns about more advanced capabilities they may have in the near future. On Tuesday, Democratic senators Ron Wyden, Ed Markey, and Jeff Merkley addressed an open letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg about the company’s reported plans to integrate face-recognition technology into these devices.“Given Meta’s vast data collections, its smart glasses could capture images of thousands of people without their knowledge or consent and then instantly link those faces to names, workplaces, or personal profiles, creating serious risks of stalking, harassment, and targeted intimidation,” the…

Photograph: Christopher NullAsusZenbook S 16 (UM5606)Lastly, I’ll point you in the direction of the Asus Zenbook S 16. I’ve always appreciated this laptop for its stunning design. That all-white aesthetic, oversized trackpad, and those thin bezels make it stand out. There’s also the fact that it’s only 0.48 inches thick, which is very close to as thin as the MacBook Air. My only problem with this laptop has been that the pricing refused to drop throughout much of last year. It was hard to justify at over $1,500, regardless of how polished it felt. These days, the price is hovering…

Other Good International PhonesThese phones are worth considering if you have yet to see something you like.Photograph: Simon HillOppo Find N6 for $1,959: Touting a creaseless 8.12-inch display, the Find N6 is a beautifully engineered folding phone that’s impossibly slim and light. Despite the promise, the crease is still discernible, but you’ll hardly notice it when the screen is on, though you’ll feel it if you use the optional stylus. Performance is impressively slick, with enough stamina to see you through a busy day, and the camera system is excellent. It’s a big step up over last year’s N5, with…

Situated at the top of this 16.5-inch caffeination station is a removable hatch that covers up a sloped bean hopper, which maxed out at about 100 grams of whole-bean light-roast coffee in my tests. To the right is a grind size dial with six detented positions that are easy enough to land between with a slight twist. The finest setting on the Profile is nowhere near the finest setting on my Bodum Bistro grinder, but this isn’t an espresso machine, so it’s hard to say this really matters. The onboard grinder is often the weakest link on all-in-one machines, but…

The war with Iran and ensuing blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping lane, has spiked oil prices and sent governments scrabbling for their reserves. How high will prices go, and how bad could it get?On Friday night, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby published a memo to his employees that demonstrates his very fuel-dependent business is prepping for a very long fallout. “Our plans assume oil goes to $175/barrel and doesn’t get back down to $100/barrel until the end of 2027,” he wrote.Jet fuel accounts for between a quarter and a third of airlines’ operating costs. Prices have…

Nvidia’s GTC conference had everything: trillion dollar sales projections, graphics technology that can yassify video games, grand declarations that every company needs an OpenClaw strategy, and even a robot version of the beloved snowman Olaf from Disney’s “Frozen.” On the latest episode of TechCrunch’s Equity podcast, TechCrunch’s Kirsten Korosec, Sean O’Kane, and I recapped CEO Jensen Huang’s keynote and debated what it means for Nvidia’s future. And yes, a big part of our discussion focused on poor Olaf, whose microphone had to be turned off when he started rambling. Even if the demo had gone flawlessly, Sean might still have…

The Securities and Exchange Commission has closed its investigation into electric vehicle startup Faraday Future, despite SEC staff on the case recommending an enforcement action last year, TechCrunch has learned. Four sources familiar with the investigation, who were granted anonymity to speak about the government case, told TechCrunch that the SEC informed the company and people involved in the probe about the closure this past week. The dismissal of the case comes amid a historic drop in enforcement actions by the SEC, which only initiated four cases against publicly-traded companies in its 2025 fiscal year, a recent report shows. The…

AI coding company Cursor launched a new model this week called Composer 2, which it promoted as offering “frontier-level coding intelligence.”  However, an X user posting under the name Fynn soon claimed that Composer 2 was “just Kimi 2.5” with additional reinforcement learning — Kimi 2.5 being an open source model recently released by Moonshot AI, a Chinese company backed by Alibaba and HongShan (formerly Sequoia China).  As evidence, Fynn pointed to code that seemed to identify Kimi as the model. “[A]t least rename the model ID,” they scoffed. It was a surprising revelation, since Cursor is a well-funded U.S.…

Elon Musk recently outlined ambitious plans for a chip-building collaboration between his companies Tesla and SpaceX. Bloomberg reports that Musk shared his plans on Saturday night at an event in downtown Austin, Texas, with a photo suggesting that what Musk is calling the “Terafab” facility will be built near Tesla’s Austin headquarters and “gigafactory.” Musk said he’s pursuing this project because semiconductor manufacturers aren’t making chips quickly enough for his companies’ artificial intelligence and robotics needs: “We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab.” The goal is…

Local Hub: Manufacturers like Eufy and TP-Link offer smart hubs that link wirelessly to their security cameras and offer expandable storage. Sometimes these local hubs allow for more local AI processing (Eufy’s hub enables facial recognition). They can also sometimes extend the wireless signal and stability for cameras. These hubs often need to be plugged directly into your router via Ethernet cable.MicroSD Card: Plugging a microSD card into a camera is a quick and simple way to record locally, but if an intruder steals the camera, your footage is gone with it. Occasionally, camera manufacturers offer indoor hubs that are…
