On Tuesday, Amazon announced that Uber was expanding its contract for AWS cloud services to run more of its ride-sharing features on Amazon’s chips. Uber will particularly expand its use of AWS’s Graviton (a low-power, ARM-based server CPU) and start a new trial testing Trainium3, AWS’s Nvidia competitor AI chip. This deal is a bit less about a long-term threat to Nvidia than it is a thorough thumbing of the nose by Amazon at AWS’s cloud competitors, Google and Oracle. While Uber historically ran its own data centers, back in 2023, the ride-hailing company famously signed giant, multi-year cloud computing…
After years of resisting, Google Chrome is finally adopting vertical tabs — a feature more recently popularized by the Arc browser, a predecessor to the AI browser Dia. Google announced on Tuesday that Chrome users will have the option to enable vertical tabs, which will move the tabs to the side of the browser window, making it easier to read full page titles and manage tab groups. Once enabled, vertical tabs will remain the default setting until the user changes it back. A group of Russian government hackers have hijacked thousands of home and small business routers around the world as part of an ongoing campaign aimed at redirecting victim’s internet traffic to steal their passwords and access tokens, security researchers and government authorities warned on Tuesday. This is the latest tactic by the long-running Russian hacking group known as Fancy Bear, or APT 28, known for its high-profile hacks and spying operations, including the breach of the Democratic National Committee in 2016 and the destructive hack that hit satellite provider Viasat in 2022. Fancy Bear is widely believed to be part…
Anthropic on Tuesday released a preview of its new frontier model, Mythos, which it says will be used by a small coterie of partner organizations for cybersecurity work. In a previously leaked memo, the AI startup called the model one of its “most powerful” yet. The model’s limited debut is part of a new security initiative, dubbed Project Glasswing, in which 12 partner organizations will deploy the model for the purposes of “defensive security work” and to secure critical software, Anthropic said. While it was not specifically trained for cybersecurity work, the model will be used to scan both first-party…
It takes just a skim of Eclipse’s recent investments to see where this venture firm’s interests lie — and where it is headed. The Palo Alto-based VC, which saw its median deal size explode over the past several years, has poured an increasing amount of money into the “physical world.” Its deals include electric boat developer Arc, buzzy battery recycling and material firm Redwood Materials, self-driving construction vehicle startup Bedrock Robotics, autonomous vehicle tech company Wayve, and industrial robotics lab Mind Robotics. With $1.3 billion in fresh capital — which is split between a $591 million early-stage incubation fund and…

Arcee, a tiny 26-person U.S. startup that built a massive, 400B-parameter open source LLM on a $20 million shoestring budget, has released its new reasoning model. Arcee calls the model Trinity Large Thinking — and it’s the most capable open-weight model “ever released by a non-Chinese company,” claims CEO Mark McQuade to TechCrunch. As that comment implies, Arcee has a goal that I can’t help but root for: It wants to give U.S. and Western companies a model that gives them no reason to use a Chinese-based one. While Chinese models are extremely capable, they are perceived as risky, putting…
The iPhone is the least fixable phone on the market, according to repairability experts. Phones from Samsung and Google are not far behind. The latest repairability ratings are from an annual report called “Failing the Fix” put out today by the consumer advocacy group US PIRG. A 2021 French law required products to be labeled with repairability scores, and US PIRG says this is the first report since then that really shows which companies are—or are not—making progress. The answer is that repairability is progressing much more quickly in some places than others. The results were good for phones made by Motorola,…
Most companies talk about being AI-first. David A. Steinberg has been doing it since 2017. In this episode of The Speed of Culture podcast, Matt Britton sits down with David A. Steinberg, co-founder, chairman and CEO of Zeta Global. David shares how Zeta built a data and AI platform that now serves 51% of the Fortune 100, why the company sees itself as the disruptor rather than the disrupted in a rapidly shifting martech landscape, and what it took to rearchitect the business around artificial intelligence starting in 2017. The conversation covers the launch of Athena, Zeta’s voice-enabled AI copilot built in partnership…
Intel will join SpaceX and Tesla in an effort to build a new U.S. semiconductor factory in Texas, although the scope of its contributions are unclear. “Our ability to design, fabricate, and package ultra-high-performance chips at scale will help accelerate Terafab’s aim to produce 1 TW/year of compute to power future advances in AI and robotics,” Intel said in a corporate post on X. Intel hasn’t shared any more information. Elon Musk announced in March a team-up between the two tech companies he leads to develop chips for AI compute, satellites, and SpaceX’s mooted space data center and to support…
As US President Donald Trump threatens wholesale demolition of Iran’s infrastructure in the midst of an escalating war, Iran now appears to have already reciprocated with its own form of infrastructure sabotage: A hacking campaign hitting industrial control systems across the United States, including energy and water utilities, that US agencies say has had disruptive and costly effects. In a joint advisory published Tuesday, a group of US agencies including the FBI, the National Security Agency, the Department of Energy, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency warned that a group of hackers affiliated with the Iranian government has targeted industrial…

The U.S. government is warning that Iran-backed hackers are escalating their tactics by targeting American critical infrastructure systems with the aim of causing disruption. In a joint advisory published Tuesday, the FBI, the National Security Agency, U.S. cybersecurity agency CISA, and the U.S. Department of Energy collectively warned that Iranian government hackers have been exploiting internet-facing systems used across a range of sectors. These include water and waste-water utilities, energy, and local government facilities. The agencies did not specifically name any of the targets, but said that the hacks were aimed at causing “disruptive effects within the United States,” and…
According to the space agency, the astronauts took turns photographing this region of the moon during the seven-hour approach, working in pairs. At their closest point to the surface, about 6,550 km, the moon looked to the naked eye like a ball held 40 centimeters from the face. The sharpness of the images was due to the professional photographic equipment they carried aboard. The Artemis II crew with eclipse viewing glasses: Christina Koch, Jeremy Hansen, Reid Wiseman, and Victor Glover (top right). If the biggest surprise awaiting America’s first-time parents isn’t caring for an infant, it’s paying for one: Bringing a newborn into the house runs just shy of $19,000. It’s little wonder, then, that the hallowed institution of the bridal registry has expanded into a wish list to help parents acquire essentials ranging from formula to car seats. At the center of this movement is Babylist, an online portal that notched 45% growth last year hitting revenues of $750 million. Chief growth officer Lee Anne Blake was a key executive in that trajectory (she left in 2025), but since its 2011 founding,…
