Fusion power’s biggest question remains unanswered: how do you ensure the cost to start the fusion reaction isn’t higher than the price at which you can sell the power? Plenty of people have ideas, but no one has cracked it yet. Commonwealth Fusion Systems, for example, is confident enough that it’s building a massive reactor that costs several hundred million dollars. But the device won’t be turned on until next year, leaving the question unanswered for now. Other companies that were founded more recently think they have a shot at building a fusion power plant for less, including Pacific Fusion,…

THE AD: Anthropic’s Super Bowl debut, “A Time and a Place,” pushes back against the inclusion of ads in AI chatbots. Four ads depict common reasons people turn to Claude—to ask questions about their health, relationships, or work—and show an intimate moment interrupted by a sponsored response from a fictional ad-supported chatbot, represented by a human actor. The results are intentionally jarring. MY TAKE: Anthropic’s message is admittedly timely. Rival OpenAI is preparing to roll out beta ads on ChatGPT, with upfront commitments starting at $200,000. Founder Sam Altman’s once-hardline stance against advertising has noticeably softened. Against that backdrop, Anthropic’s campaign…

Another 10.5 million people are affected across Oregon, per the state’s attorney general.  Conduent has also notified hundreds of…

However, rendered here in Motorola’s Watch app, everything looks fun and easy! Motorola (and Polar, I guess) uses Apple’s “close your rings” approach, with active minutes, steps, and calories. I particularly like that you can now use Polar’s sleep tracking with a cheaper Android watch. Polar takes into account sleep time, solidity (whether or not your sleep was interrupted), and regeneration to give you a Nightly Recharge Status. You can still click through and see your ANS, but there’s a lot more context surrounding it. Also, the graphs are prettier. I compared the sleep, heart rate, and stress measurements to my…

ElevenLabs co-founder and CEO Mati Staniszewski says voice is becoming the next major interface for AI – the way people will increasingly interact with machines as models move beyond text and screens. Speaking at Web Summit in Doha, Staniszewski told TechCrunch voice models like those developed by ElevenLabs have recently moved beyond simply mimicking human speech — including emotion and intonation – to working in tandem with the reasoning capabilities of large language models. The result, he argued, is a shift in how people interact with technology.  In the years ahead, he said, “hopefully all our phones will go back…

It’s essentially two shallow plastic containers with stainless steel inserts (both dishwasher safe) and tamper-resistant lids that are locked and automatically open using an old-school egg-style timer that runs on a AA battery rather than electricity. Although the container has an ice pack to keep the wet food cool, after one night it lost virtually all of its coolness. There’s a lid-link clip attachment, a small piece of plastic that links the…
