Right-wing officials and data center investors are increasingly claiming that data center protests are being funded and influenced by the Chinese government. OpenAI added to the discourse on Wednesday when it released a report describing a cluster of accounts originating in China that, the company said, had been spreading anti-data center messages on social media.Experts who spoke to WIRED, however, are skeptical of the funding claims. They also say that it’s likely that any foreign interference is simply adding on to existing tensions over data centers and AI in the US.Local opposition to data centers in the US has skyrocketed…

The IPO market is back, and it’s not the same companies leading the charge. FAANG had a good run, but a new acronym is taking over: MANGOS — Meta (or Microsoft, depending on who you ask), Anthropic, Nvidia, Google, OpenAI, and SpaceX. Half of that bunch is heading to public markets in the same window, and it’s a stress test for investors, for valuations, and for […]AI,Fundraising,ai infrastructure,Anthropic,Apple WWDC,ChatGPT,FAANG,Google,IPO,MANGOS,OpenAI,Sam Bankman-Fried,SBF,SpaceX,Waymoai infrastructure,Anthropic,Apple WWDC,ChatGPT,FAANG,Google,IPO,MANGOS,OpenAI,Sam Bankman-Fried,SBF,SpaceX,Waymo#SpaceX #Anthropic #OpenAIs #hot #IPO #summer1781282161
The matchmaker Blaine Anderson, who runs the high-end dating service Dating by Blaine, receives a lot of hyper-specific requests from her wealthy male clients, many of which she documents on her popular social media accounts. But no one was more difficult than the man she refers to as Daniel. (Anderson uses pseudonyms when discussing her clients to protect their privacy.)Daniel was in his early forties and had never been married, but was looking to start a family, according to Anderson. Like most of her clients, he’s fabulously wealthy, a successful tech founder who’d sold his company a few years prior. (Anderson,…
Within an hour after a horrific knife attack took place in Belfast on Monday night, far-right UK activist Tommy Robinson had shared a video of the incident on X, a post that racked up six million views. Within hours Elon Musk, the owner of the platform, weighed in, agreeing with a post calling for “consequences” for politicians.By Tuesday morning, supercharged by X, the video was everywhere, and groups on Facebook were organizing protests across Northern Ireland and the UK. Far-right figures in the US and UK continued to pour fuel on the fire online, framing the incident as part of…
SpaceX has captured the attention of media, investors, and the public for years now — interest propelled by the company’s reusable rocket launches, the rise of its Starlink satellite network, and of course, for its founder and CEO Elon Musk. But in its 24-year history, nothing quite compares to this initial public offering. Everyone seems to be interested, and perhaps it’s because of the sheer size of this IPO. The company priced its 555.6 million shares at $135 each to raise $75 billio, making it the largest IPO in history. At this price, the deal also looks set to make…
On a blustery March day, the artist Jim Sanborn received visitors at his studio on an isolated island in the Chesapeake Bay. The visitors sat him down in front of a laptop, and he typed in a secret message. They compressed the message using a unique hash function, sent that to the cloud, and wiped the laptop clean. Sanborn hoped that this action would set him free. But did it?That’s the latest twist in the story of Kryptos, the famous Sanborn sculpture that’s been sitting outside CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, since 1990. The artwork is a copper S-curve that…
As the undisputed Queen of Pop returns to the dance floor with her upcoming 15th studio album, Confessions II, Absolut has added Madonna to its long list of celebrated artistic collaborators.Inspired by Absolut Vodka’s long-running “Absolut Perfection” campaign, which reimagines its bottle silhouette, “Absolut Icon” reframes the brand’s signature design through the lens of Madonna’s musical legacy, to commemorate its role as the album’s official vodka partner. Absolut worked closely with Special Offer, the design team behind Confessions II’s visual identity, on the campaign, which features Madonna clad in her famous purple corset bodysuit, made famous by her 2006 Grammy Awards…
The Song setting lets each track length work independently, and Band mode is a hybrid of Sync and Song. The final mode, Free, leaves all four tracks unsynced, which is fun if you’re inclined to crank up a ton of effects and drift into space with layered soundscapes rather than structured normie music.Three main views are available to help you keep track of your looping: Track, Wave, and Mixer. Your preferred view can function as your home screen. Track displays the level of each track’s loop and input in a vertical bar that changes colors based on its state. Wave…
The House of Representatives has failed to renew the U.S. government’s warrant-less surveillance law before it is due to expire on Friday, all but guaranteeing that it will lapse for the first time, as lawmakers protest the appointment of a controversial Trump ally to oversee U.S. intelligence agencies. The House voted 218-198 on the bill, which needed a two-thirds majority to pass; 19 Republican lawmakers voted against it. According to Politico, the next vote is scheduled for June 23. The spy law, officially dubbed the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), broadly allows U.S. intelligence agencies to collect vast amounts of…
Steven Spielberg’s new film Disclosure Day imagines the moment 8 billion humans find out that we are not alone in the universe. The movie, which opens in US theaters on June 12, is a fictional account of the government cover-up and subsequent “disclosure” of evidence that aliens have contacted Earth. The UFO community has been chasing that type of cinematic big reveal for 80 years. But it’s more likely that monumental scientific discoveries, like the detection of the Higgs boson in 2012 and the confirmation of gravitational waves in 2016, are a better guideline for how real-world disclosure is likely to play…
The handling at that top speed was excellent. Thanks to the comfortable upright position and frame geometry, cruising along at 28 miles per hour felt smooth and comfortable. Turning at speed and quickly adjusting to avoid a pothole was also easy and smooth, even when I was gunning the throttle. The thrill of riding fast on the H/T comes from the exhilaration of speed, not the fear of losing control.I appreciate that there’s no app to go along with the H/T. It makes hopping on the bike and going for a ride feel much more natural than it does with…

South Korean authorities have imposed a record-breaking fine of $624 billion won (over $400 million) on retail giant Coupang after a data breach last year compromised the personal data of more than 34 million customers. Seoul’s Personal Information Protection Commission issued the maximum penalty on Thursday following discovery of the breach in December 2025. The retail giant, which is headquartered in the U.S. but popular in South Korea and likened to the “Amazon of Asia,” had said the months-long data breach allowed a former employee to obtain names, email and shipping addresses, phone numbers, and order histories of about two-thirds…
Influencers covering the 2026 World Cup in the United States will not be able to create content for monetization on social media without a work visa, according to a joint statement issued by Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Homeland Security. DoorDash announced on Thursday that it’s launching a new AI chatbot that lets users order food and groceries with text prompts and photos in its latest AI push. The chatbot, called “Ask DoorDash,” allows users to search the app for what they’re looking for in their own words instead of having to scroll through restaurants and stores to build a cart. You can tell the chatbot what you’re in the mood for, share a recipe link to find the items, or describe the reservation you’re looking for. “Traditional search works best when you know the exact restaurant or table you’re…
