Does a consumer hardware company need to get on the VC treadmill to succeed? Eleven years and 290 million products sold across 115 countries later, PopSockets has proven that the bootstrapped, low-dilution path more viable than the industry gives it credit for. The global consumer hardware brand was built on less than $500k, no institutional capital, and a philosophy professor’s determination. Watch as founder and former CEO […]Startups,Amazon, bootstrapping, consumer hardware, manufacturing, patent protection, popsockets, retailAmazon, bootstrapping, consumer hardware, manufacturing, patent protection, popsockets, retail#house #burned #insurance #money #buildPopSockets1772670072
Today, Apple announced its new budget MacBook. At $599, it looks seriously impressive. While I haven’t tested its performance, battery life, or display just yet, it may end up being hard to beat at that price based on some of the specs alone. But that doesn’t mean the competition isn’t there. I want to recommend a couple of Windows laptops deals that offer various advantages over the MacBook Neo, showing where the Neo has both strengths and weaknesses.First, check out this Asus Vivobook 14, a laptop I’ve been happy to recommend as a budget computer for the past year. In many…
British advertising titan WPP has named Nancy Hall CEO of WPP Media U.S. following a months-long search for a leader of the division helmed by WPP Media global CEO Brian Lesser. Hall is stepping into the role after a nine-month stint as the company’s chief client officer. Prior to that, she was North America CEO at Mindshare, a WPP-owned media agency. She brings nearly 25 years of experience to her new post, having worked across adland holding companies including IPG and Publicis. In those roles, Hall helped to build out programmatic and tech capabilities designed to drive client outcomes. “My priority is…
Anthropic co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei is not happy — perhaps predictably so — with OpenAI chief Sam Altman. In a memo to staff, reported by The Information, Amodei referred to OpenAI’s dealings with the Department of Defense as “safety theater.” “The main reason [OpenAI] accepted [the DoD’s deal] and we did not is that they cared about placating employees, and we actually cared about preventing abuses,” Amodei wrote. Last week, Anthropic and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) failed to come to an agreement over the military’s request for unrestricted access to the AI company’s technology. Anthropic, which already…
Several key tech companies signed a nonbinding pledge at the White House on Wednesday that the Trump administration claims will ensure that tech companies do not pass the cost of data centers on to consumers’ utility bills.“Data centers … they need some PR help,” President Donald Trump said at the event. “People think that if the data center goes in, their electricity is going to go up.”He was flanked by representatives from Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, xAI, Google/Alphabet, Oracle, and Amazon.Bipartisan anger about data centers and their potential impact on consumers’ electric bills has exploded over the past year. As the…
In recent years, news has never been more in demand—or more misunderstood by advertisers. As the war with Iran escalates and as AI-generated content makes it difficult to tell fact from fiction on social media, audiences are turning to trusted news sources, creating an unprecedented opportunity in premium, high-intent environments that drive efficient performance and brand growth. Yet at the very moment when news consumption is surging, many brands continue what Stagwell Chairman and CEO Mark Penn has correctly labeled an “unintentional boycott”—the slow, systematic draining of ad dollars from news, driven by unfounded brand safety fears.News is a premium attention…
Apple Music is changing the way that record labels and distributors can flag AI-generated or AI-assisted content when they upload it to the platform. According to Music Business Worldwide, Apple sent a newsletter to industry partners on Wednesday to explain how it will roll out a new set of metadata to promote transparency around how and when AI is used in music. Metadata typically refers to fields like the song title, album title, genre, artist name, and other information that helps keep files organized. Now, Apple Music will add the option to include metadata tags that distributors can apply to…
With Apple’s current crop of iPhones, things are quite different for the first time in a while. The base iPhone 17 still feels familiar, but the iPhone 17 Pro models have a completely new look, and there’s a new model called the iPhone Air. The “Air” branding has been somewhat diluted of late—the current-gen iPad Pro models are lighter than the iPad Air—but the iPhone Air brings meaning back to the original idea: a super-thin and ultralightweight device. Rounding it all out is the budget iPhone 17e.The new phones are officially on sale. If you’re considering an upgrade, which iPhone…
Netflix is giving advertisers something they’ve been asking for: retail-grade data inside a premium streaming environment.Starting in Q2 in the U.S., brands buying Netflix inventory through Amazon DSP will be able to apply Amazon Audiences—advertiser segments built from Amazon users’ shopping, browsing, and streaming behavior—to their campaigns. This allows brands to tap into what the company describes as “trillions” of shopping, browsing, and streaming signals to reach viewers based on real-world purchase behavior.“By applying Amazon’s exclusive signals to Netflix’s highly engaged viewers, advertisers can reach the right audiences and drive even stronger performance,” the company said in a blog post…
Google is moving forward with a series of Play Store changes after settling a years-long legal battle with Fortnite maker Epic Games over anticompetitive concerns. The tech giant on Wednesday said it will drop its Play Store commissions to 20% on in-app purchases, with another 5% tacked on if app developers choose to use Google’s billing system. It’s also making it easier for users to install alternative app stores through a new optional program called the Registered App Stores program. “With these updates, we have also resolved our disputes worldwide with Epic Games,” Google said in a company blog post.…
Other Good USB Hubs to ConsiderUgreen Revodok Pro 211 Docking Station for $64: Most laptop docking stations are bulky gadgets that often require a power source, but this one from Ugreen straddles the line between dock and hub. It has a small, braided cable running to a relatively large aluminum block. It’s a bit hefty but still compact, and it packs a lot of extra power. It has three USB ports (one USB-C and two USB-A) that each reached up to 900 MB/s of data-transfer speeds in my testing. That was enough to move large amounts of 4K video footage…
Chicago’s Manifest has tapped a longtime BarkleyOKRP executive and Chicago agency veteran to unify its client leadership following last year’s merger with Aisle Rocket.Betsy Ross joins the midsize independent as chief client officer, the first major leadership hire since the two agencies formally integrated under a single brand. U.S. and European law enforcement have seized the database from LeakBase, which prosecutors have touted as “one of the world’s largest online forums for cybercriminals” for sharing stolen passwords and hacking tools. U.S. and European police seized the site earlier this week, and say its database has over 142,000 members and more than 215,000 messages sent between members. LeakBase has been operating since 2021, the authorities said, and had a continuously maintained archive of hacked databases, including hundreds of millions of account credentials, credit card numbers, and banking account and routing information. This is the latest takedown targeting sites that…
Global oil and gas prices have skyrocketed following the US attack on Iran last weekend. But another key global supply chain is also at risk, one that may directly impact American farmers who have already been squeezed for months by tariff wars. The conflict in the Middle East is choking global supplies of fertilizer right before the crucial spring planting season.“This literally could not be happening at a worse time,” says Josh Linville, the vice president of fertilizer at financial services company StoneX.The global fertilizer market focuses on three main macronutrients: phosphates, nitrogen, and potash. All of them are produced…
NBC News’ Today has made it six consecutive weeks as the top morning show in the country in both total viewers and the Adults 25-54 demo for the week of February 23.With the conclusion of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics the prior weekend, NBC News’ first-place lead is getting smaller, with only 93,000 viewers separating it from ABC News’ Good Morning America.Meanwhile, the George Stephanopoulos, Robin Roberts, and Michael Strahan-led program finished the final week of February as the only morning show to post gains in both measured categories.NOTE: CBS Mornings and Today were retitled on Monday (02/23/26) to CBS…
X Chat’s standalone app isn’t the only new service X is testing this week. The company has also begun offering select users invites to its X Money payments service, which was previously being tested internally among X employees. These invites, however, were not doled out in the typical way. Instead, X owner Elon Musk worked with William Shatner (yes, the actor) to invite people into the beta in exchange for a $1,000 donation to Shatner’s charity that supports children’s and veterans’ organizations. On X, the “Star Trek” actor has been sharing information about the X Money service and its beta…
