To achieve a smart home, you need a voice assistant to run it. A smart home assistant, usually folded into a smart speaker, will let you command your smart home with your voice and run your various routines. It also acts as a center for every gadget you want to add to your home. And you can add almost anything these days, from smart garage control to even voice-commanding your blinds. But which assistant should you choose? Each of the big players comes with its own pros and cons, but I recommend choosing based on what you already use day-to-day. Your…
Chipotle has hired Fernando Machado, the former chief marketing officer (CMO) of Burger King, as chief brand officer (CBO). The marketer will lead strategy, brand positioning, and customer engagement efforts for the business, starting June 1. Stephanie Perdue, who has served as interim CMO since Brandt’s departure, has now been promoted to senior vp of brand marketing.Machado spent over seven years in senior marketing roles at Restaurant Brands International (RBI), working across brands including Burger King, Popeyes, and Tim Hortons. InkPoster isn’t unique. The Aura Ink ($449) is a 13-inch option with similar screen specifications, while smart home company SwitchBot has taken a different approach, layering automation and AI image generation onto a choice of 7.3-, 13.3-, and 31.5-inch displays, with pricing from just $149. Neither feels as grown-up or art-focussed as InkPoster, but it’s clear that the E Ink panels can be made cheaply and could be the start of the next wave of home display tech.Photograph: Chris Haslam/WIREDSmart PaperInkPoster uses a Spectra 6 E Ink panel here, with a Sharp IGZO backplane, running at 2160 x 3060 across…
Chief executives (CEOs) are more aligned with their chief marketing officers (CMOs) than ever. But that isn’t translating into how the marketing function is perceived by the corner office, according to Boathouse’s annual CEO Survey of leaders at 150 top U.S. marketers. While marketers increasingly position themselves as growth drivers, Boathouse CEO John Connors said CMOs are failing to instill confidence in their ability to boost the bottom line.“In our first study five years ago, CEOs thought the CMO spoke marketing mumbo jumbo. They now believe CMOs understand the business and speak its language,” he told ADWEEK.
In the years following the book’s release, a bro-y community of hobbyists has dabbled with their own wires and screens to create homebrew devices, frequently for hacking purposes or on-the-go coding. Historically, decks have resembled a heavy-duty laptop, featuring a screen and small keyboard, often sleek, utilitarian, and housed in a Pelican briefcase to survive imagined, apocalyptic scenarios. One niche ham radio YouTuber, over a year ago, titled his tutorial video “DIY Doomsday Cyberdeck EMAIL/TEXT without INTERNET” and, of course, included the “prepper” hashtag. What sets Tan’s cyberdeck apart is its aesthetic. Inside her refurbished clamshell purse, hardware-wise, is a Raspberry…

For its famous intractability, the Bloomberg Terminal has long inspired devotion, bordering on obsession. Among traders, the ability to chart a path through the software’s dizzying scrolls of numbers and text to isolate far-flung information is the mark of a seasoned professional. But as a greater mass of data is fed into the Terminal—not only earnings and asset prices, but weather forecasts, shipping logs, factory locations, consumer spending patterns, private loans, and so on—valuable information is being lost. “It has become more and more untenable,” says Shawn Edwards, chief technology officer at Bloomberg. “You miss things, or it takes too long.”To…
Measuring the efficacy of ad spend continues to be one of the thorniest issues marketers face, and the frustrations bubbled up across multiple sessions during ADWEEK House at the Possible conference in Miami.During a session about measuring incrementality—or how much an ad campaign contributed to sales, above and beyond what would have happened anyway—Sandra Abla, director of brand marketing strategy at CAVA, noted the tricky situation marketers often face.“As a brand marketer, you want everything to work, and if it doesn’t, you have to explain why,” said Abla. “But explaining that can be really difficult.”One problem is that marketers have…

The pet food aisle has never been more crowded, which is exactly why Hillary Coles says she was skeptical when Atomic Labs came calling. “I had the same reaction you did,” Coles told me on a call Monday afternoon, a day before her new company, Golden Child, opened for business. “Surely that can’t be what people need.” Coles co-founded Hims & Hers with Andrew Dudum, Jack Abraham, and Joe Spector back in 2016 and spent seven years there overseeing brand, physical products, and consumer strategy before taking a year and a half off to have her children. She describes herself…

Founded in 2024, Snabbit said it is now processing over 40,000 jobs daily across a…
A jury was selected on Monday during the first day of trial for Musk v. Altman in a federal court in Oakland, California. Some of the jurors that were ultimately selected voiced concerns over Musk himself, as well as the AI technology at the core of the case, but assured the court they would put these concerns aside for the trial. The kick off also catalyzed an array of shenanigans outside the courtroom.OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and president Greg Brockman were spotted in the security line inside the courthouse this morning, but Elon Musk was nowhere to be found. A…
American energy technology company Itron has confirmed it was hit by a cyberattack in mid-April and that hackers had gained access to some of its systems. In a legally required filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission late on Friday, Itron said it was “notified” that it had an intruder in its systems. The company did not say who notified it, but added that it subsequently expelled the hackers and has seen no signs of further intrusions to its internal systems. Itron did not specify the type of cyberattack it experienced, such as whether ransomware was deployed or if…
There have been plenty of rumors about OpenAI’s hardware plans, which involve launching a pair of earbuds. A new note from industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that the AI company might be working on a phone in collaboration with MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare. Kuo, who has reported on several Apple hardware plans in the past, said that OpenAI would develop a smartphone chip with MediaTek and Qualcomm, with Luxshare acting as a co-design and manufacturing partner. The analyst’s note also suggests that instead of apps, the smartphone could rely on AI agents to complete different tasks. Currently, Apple and Google…
