Nobody gets into advertising to become a manager. But if you’re good at it, that’s where you end up.Inevitably, your job moves from making things to nurturing your teams’ ideas, managing their careers, and taking the hits so they can do the work. It’s the hardest pivot in our business outside of landing your first job.And the industry is terrible at preparing creatives for it. I struggled with this transition more than I’d like to admit. Watching other managers helped. The great ones showed me what to aim for and the bad ones showed me what to avoid. But osmosis has…
World, the online verification startup co-founded by OpenAI’s Sam Altman, has raised $52.5 million through a crypto token sale to strategic investors. Participating investors joined a 12-month lockup sale of World’s token, WLD. Lockup periods prevent asset buyers from selling or trading their tokens for a set period of time. The year-long lockup demonstrates investors’ “long-term commitment to World’s continued growth and utility,” the company said Friday in a press release. The money will go to the World Foundation, an exempted limited guarantee foundation based in the Cayman Islands, created to steward the expansion of World’s network. The sale’s lead…
If you’re of a certain age, you’ll remember the way the web used to be: sites made and developed by humans. You could load up a directory like AltaVista or Yahoo and click through categories including Home & Family, Science, and Computers. In those listings you’d find pages put together by hobbyists, academics, and tech nerds.People gathered around forums and bulletin boards, and web developers tended to avoid putting images on their sites because it would slow down page loading. The idea of watching a video over the internet seemed almost impossible. In the decades since those formative years, the web has…
Plenty of brands spent millions on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but which accomplished their viewership goooals?According to tech and data company Samba, over 75% of U.S. households watched at least one World Cup match, with 62% watching three or more games. The data shows audiences were engaged throughout the tournament, giving brands plenty of opportunity to capitalize on spend, which could reach $50 million or more in sponsorship deals alone at the broadcasters.Samba Media Intelligence has tracked more than 6,000 brands with ads in the World Cup in the U.S., but some were on top of their game plans…
Rivian has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government in an attempt to claw back a “full refund” on tariffs it paid under President Trump’s “Liberation Day” taxes, which the Supreme Court later ruled unconstitutional. The automaker joins a long line of companies seeking such refunds. In April, Rivian CFO Claire McDonough said she expected the company stood to reap a refund in the “tens of millions of dollars.” Rivian’s action comes as the company is in the middle of rolling out its first mass-market SUV, the R2. It expects to ship around 20,000-25,000 of them by the end of…
A huge debate is brewing in Silicon Valley over the proliferation of Chinese-made artificial intelligence tools, particularly “open-weight” AI systems that, by some measures, can compete with or even outperform some of the best US models. My WIRED colleague Hugo Lowell has written about the Trump administration’s internal debate on how to handle these Chinese models. Among AI companies in the Valley, the issue is proving even more divisive.A top concern in both DC and the Valley relates to distillation, in which a less capable AI model is trained on the outputs of a more powerful one. In June, Anthropic…
As the industry consolidates and bets on scale, Havas is content being the midsize challenger.“I don’t want to say bad things about my competitors, but when I compare Havas results and some of our peers, I’m not sure that in today’s world scale is an advantage,” CEO Yannick Bolloré told ADWEEK ahead of the holding company’s second quarter earnings call on Thursday.Havas posted 2.5% organic growth in the second quarter, with North America up 6.4%. Though most of its peers have yet to report this quarter, they top Publicis’ Q2 results and beat out WPP and Omnicom’s Q1 performance in…
Facebook is rolling out updates today in a bid to increase engagement and make the platform more organized for its users. In the offing are new apps for sellers on Marketplace; a verification system to prove you are human on services like Dating, Marketplace, and Groups; and a new immersive design for video. Facebook Marketplace sees more than 430 million monthly listings, and with more than 1.1 billion active users, it is a big reason younger folks still use the platform. To keep this momentum going, Facebook is launching a separate app for people who list and sell items on…
Forget cheating on homework and chatbot friends. Some kids are getting in on a new AI trend: thinking it sucks. In the four years since chatbots went mainstream, and their marketing campaigns went into overdrive, young people have grown increasingly skeptical of the hype around LLMs. Yes, many of them still use the tech for school assignments and companionship, but according to market research firm YPulse, 37 percent of teens aged 13 to 17 cringe when they see AI content like music and videos, and more than half worry about misinformation and deepfakes. The polling on youthful AI attitudes shows a great…
After the success of the 2026 World Cup—which brought in more than $15 billion in revenue for FIFA and a record 38.9 million average viewers for the final match on Fox—the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics is already seeing increased interest from brands that want in on the U.S.’ next global sporting event.“The World Cup having gone so well has been a huge boost for our business while providing learnings for our partners,” said John Slusher, CEO of U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Properties (USOPP). “For partners not already involved in LA28, they’re taking a second look, like, ‘how can I get…
OpenAI on Thursday said it has updated its ChatGPT desktop app to add support for ChatGPT Voice, allowing users to talk to the app to control AI agents and perform tasks on their computer. The new feature taps OpenAI’s new family of voice models called ChatGPT-Live, which it launched earlier this month. OpenAI said ChatGPT Voice works with both ChatGPT Work and Codex, and can also tap computer use skills to look up websites and apps. Plus, on macOS, with Appshots, users can let the app access what’s on their screen, including alt-text. At launch, ChatGPT Voice’s smartphone version featured…
By testing kids’ physical and mental limits, these toys help children learn where the boundaries of their knowledge lie, and how to transcend them. Take a look at some of our favorite ways to color outside the lines.Orbita MIDI Color SequencerPhotograph: Antosh SergiewThis spinning sequencer is like musical roulette for budding ravers. Place the colored magnets anywhere on the four gray concentric rings, each of which controls a MIDI loop. Then plug the sequencer into a smartphone or computer, connect your favorite music software, and get creative. All four loops run simultaneously, with each magnet representing a different note or…

Entropy is one of the most maligned and misunderstood concepts in science. Maybe you’ve heard it defined as the “amount of disorder” in a system. And the second law of thermodynamics says the entropy of a closed system always increases over time. So you might think, why should you clean up your office if it will only get messier? That might be true, but you can’t blame it on entropy. The messy-room metaphor is often used to introduce the idea (it’s usually a teenager’s bedroom—can you relate?), but it’s misleading. See, disorder doesn’t mean messiness or chaos; it refers to the…

Home cinema projectors are all over the map in terms of price and performance. It’s often the case that you get what you pay for. High-end projectors that mimic what you see at the local cineplex can cost upwards of $6,000. On the lower end, you could easily pay less than $1,000 for a home projector, but you may sacrifice brightness, contrast, and color quality. Many of our favorite projectors sit somewhere in the middle in terms of price and quality. That is certainly true of the BenQ TK705STi short-throw projector. The main cost-justifying reason to consider buying this 4K projector…
