If anything, 2026 has made clear that cybersecurity is no longer a background concern — it’s front and center, woven into almost every major story of the year. Yes, wars are still raging, the climate keeps worsening, and we’re seemingly one dodgy sneeze away from the next global pandemic. But running beneath all of it is a digital current that touches everything: wars being fought on digital fronts as well as physical ones, governments weaponizing citizens’ own data against them, botnets quietly undermining democratic institutions, nation-state hackers targeting civilian infrastructure from power grids to water systems, and ransomware gangs holding…
At 37.7 pounds, it’s just a few pounds heavier than my traditional mountain bike. And yet, with a motor capable of providing 350 watts of assistance expertly hidden in the bottom bracket, the new eElja is anything but a traditional bike.Over the past decade or so, Icelandic brand Lauf became most well known for its innovative front suspension. Rather than the traditional piston style, Lauf created a suspension system that is almost like two forks connected by a series of small glass fiber springs. These days, Lauf is venturing into complete bikes, recently rolling out the new eElja electric mountain bike…
Kitchen knives are so personal. You can do almost everything you need in a kitchen with a chef’s knife, paring knife, and a bread knife. But the more time you spend in the kitchen, the more you develop preferences, and soon it becomes a bit of an n+1 thing, and there you are, pondering a cleaver. There’s a lot of space between most chef’s knives and paring knives. What’s in that space—often called petty, prep, or utility knives—is often pretty weird. Consider the knives that you never use from a set and you’ll likely think of the short, serrated knives or…
Then there’s the missing removable storage. Yes, I’d prefer a card; it’s just easier to swap out a card in the field. But the BF does have 256 gigabytes of built-in storage. I can’t think of the last time I shot enough images to fill that much space before getting back to my laptop to download them. Which is to say that 256-gigabytes of storage is plenty for the nonprofessional photographer.Photograph: Scott GilbertsonThe main deal-breaker for me is the lack of a viewfinder. I still prefer to shoot through a viewfinder. It’s just muscle memory—hand me a camera, and I…

The Trade Desk’s chief revenue officer Anders Mortensen is exiting the company after just seven months in the role, ADWEEK has learned. The company’s chief operating officer, Vivek Kundra, will take over Mortensen’s post in an expanded remit that retains his title as COO. A company spokesperson confirmed Mortensen’s departure in a statement, saying: “As The Trade Desk continues to grow and evolve, leadership transitions are a natural part of scaling a global technology company. We enter this next phase confident in our leadership and relentlessly focused on driving results for our clients.” The spokesperson said the company thanked Mortensen for his contributions.
OpenAI announced a new feature that it says will provide additional protection from prompt injection attacks, where malicious chatbot instructions are hidden in webpages and other content sources. Among other things, Lockdown Mode will disable live web browsing (so you can only access cached content), the retrieval and display of images from the web (you can still generate images), deep research, and agent mode. The company says that even with Lockdown Mode turned on, ChatGPT could still be vulnerable to prompt injections — which could, for example, “appear in cached web content or in an uploaded file, and could still…

Former tech executive and VC Sriram Krishnan is leaving the Trump administration at the end of June. “It is hard to express how big a privilege it has been to serve the American people and how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to do so,” Krishnan said in a post on X. “First and foremost, it has been an honor to serve under President [Donald Trump]. Without his leadership, we would not be leading in the AI race.” Krishnan, who’s been serving as a senior policy advisor on artificial intelligence at the White House, was one of a…
President Donald Trump said on Friday that he’s spoken to AI companies about striking deals “where the American people can benefit from the success of AI.” Trump does not seem to have mentioned specific companies in his comments, but OpenAI is a likely candidate, especially after CNBC reported that the Trump administration has indeed been discussing an equity stake with the AI company. CNBC said some of that equity could be used to seed a “Public Wealth Fund” recently proposed by OpenAI. As outlined by the company, proceeds from the fund “could be distributed directly to citizens, allowing more people…
For years, our social media experiences have been dominated by Big Tech players like Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), Google (YouTube), Snapchat, TikTok, and X. But a growing number of startups are taking aim at these giants by building new, often smaller and more personal social networking experiences to connect people with friends, interests, and tighter-knit communities. If you’re looking for a way to extricate yourself from the grip of traditional social media and Big Tech products in general, there are a number of interesting alternatives available. Many of them cater to Gen Z and younger, a group that’s often more…
We have an idea of what the solar system’s past was like: It was violent and chaotic. However, we are still studying how violent it was. Current models suggest that at some point after their formation, the giant planets went through a phase of such extreme instability that one or even two bodies the size of Uranus or Neptune were ejected into interstellar space. If that scenario occurred, we may find clues in the most unexpected places in the solar system, such as the moons of Jupiter and, especially, those of Uranus.A recent article published in Icarus analyzed 122 possible…
This is very handy when you want to share an excerpt of writing in context, a concept that is totally lost if you just take a screenshot with a highlight. How This WorksThis feature is made possible by a web standard called Text fragments. It’s been built into browsers for years now; it’s just not the kind of feature that made a lot of headlines at the time. The feature basically creates a URL that includes enough information for your browser to find the highlighted text portion. If you copy a URL made this way and paste it into a document so…
Meta has been quietly stashing dormant face recognition code on more than 50 million phones, WIRED reported this week, tucked inside the companion app that pairs with its Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. If activated, the feature—known internally as NameTag—would let wearers identify people in front of them by matching captured faces against a biometric gallery sitting on the user’s device. It’s the same kind of technology Meta said it walked away from in 2021, after paying out billions of dollars to settle biometric privacy lawsuits in Texas and Illinois.Meanwhile, xAI is asking a federal judge to force four people…
I’d like to believe I’m organized. Reality suggests otherwise. I’ve left my smartphone in the refrigerator and spent hours searching for it. I’ve misplaced my AirPods and Oura Ring for days at a time. I once lost my house key for three months, only to find it in one of my hoodies. My typical strategy isn’t to look harder; it’s to assume whatever’s missing will eventually reappear someday. The problem is, lost items don’t always cooperate. Even seasoned travelers know that once luggage disappears onto an airport conveyor belt, all you can do is hope. That’s why Bluetooth trackers are essential.…
As a crowd of 60 anti-vaxxers squeezed into the upstairs dining area of Jonathan’s Grille in Nashville on a recent Monday night, a moment of pride washed over Scott Armstrong.Years ago, he had been let go from his job as a drug and alcohol counselor for refusing to get vaccinated. Now, unvaccinated people from all over the country were piling into the sports bar to meet others like them. There was a woman who flew in from New Jersey and another from Philadelphia. One group drove up from Florida. They were there to attend a mixer hosted by Unjected, an anti-vaccination…
