Apple is warning developers that some of their apps may not be able to call the App Store home forever. In its newly refreshed App Review Guidelines released this week, the tech giant said it may begin removing apps in certain well-established categories if they’re not “updated, improved, or attracting customers.” This marks a significant shift on Apple’s part, which earlier used to simply reject copycat apps or those in saturated categories. Previously, Apple’s guidelines had cautioned developers not to pile on in categories that already had plenty of apps. The line, somewhat hilariously, had read: “The App Store has…
Last year, Meta radically overhauled the rules around what content it would allow on its platforms. The company claimed that its own efforts policing speech had gone too far and that it would relax the rules around what speech was allowed. “We have been over-enforcing our rules, limiting legitimate political debate and censoring too much trivial content and subjecting too many people to frustrating enforcement actions,” Joel Kaplan, Meta’s chief global affairs officer, wrote in a blog post at the time.Over a year later, new research from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) shows the immediate impact of these…
Priyanka Chopra Jonas has been a brand ambassador since age 18. But her latest deal might be the biggest coup of her advertising career. Rolex will soon announce Chopra Jonas as its global brand ambassador, which would be noteworthy on its own—were she not already the brand ambassador for its luxury competitor, Bulgari, since 2021.Earlier this year, Anjula Acharia, Chopra Jonas’ manager of nearly 20 years, flew from New York City to Los Angeles for a lunch meeting at the Bel-Air Hotel with Arnaud Boetsch, Rolex’s global director of communication and image. The actress, Boetsch suggested, would do an India-only campaign for…
Finding a new app on Apple’s App Store is about to become less about browsing top charts or picking through curated collections from App Store editors. This week, Apple announced a series of discovery features that will personalize app recommendations based on users’ interests and behavior, providing a new way for developers to have their app discovered. At Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), the iPhone maker introduced Personalized Collections in the App Store, which will showcase recommendations tailored to the individual. These will also include new “App Notes” that explain why the specific apps were recommended to you. Starting this…
A longevity startup has dosed its first patient with a drug to reverse age-related sight loss.Life Biosciences is testing its ER-100 drug, which the company claims has restored vision in monkeys, for safety and side effects in a study of around 18 adults over the next year.It will be targeting patients with glaucoma and NAION, two conditions that cause damage to crucial cells in the optic nerve, which transmits visual information from the back of the eye to the brain. ER-100 is designed to rejuvenate those cells so that they work again and restore sight. It is the first-ever cellular rejuvenation…
Welcome to Cannes! The Festival of Creativity ended last year reeling from AI aftershocks. AI-generated case studies? We all leapt back in collective shock. But the ad industry—which runs on artistic inspiration, but is fundamentally bottom line driven—knows an opportunity when it sees one, and this year, Cannes Lions has fully embraced AI. Just as AI has embraced the ad industry.Cannes 2025 was only eight months removed from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman declaring, “I kind of think of ads as a last resort for us.” This year, the no-longer-a-nonprofit has sent a multitude of execs to make the rounds at panels, by…
With Harvey and Legora burning through eight-figure funding rounds, legal tools have proven to be one of the fastest-growing and most hotly contested verticals among AI startups. But while those tools focus on private practice, some startups believe there’s still plenty of the legal market that isn’t being served. Sandstone, which announced $30 million in Series A funding on Tuesday, is focused on an overlooked slice of the legal space, focusing on the tangle of overlapping tasks and systems facing in-house legal teams. The Series A was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from existing investors at Sequoia, Mantis…
The Premium model follows in late 2026 at $53,990. Same 87.9-kilo-watt-hour battery, same 330-mile range, but with 450 hp, 537 pound-foot of torque, and a 4.6-second zero-to-60 time. Still dual-motor AWD. Then the Standard Long Range model lands in early 2027 at $48,490 with a single-motor rear-wheel drive, 350 hp, and zero-to-60 in 5.9 seconds. Rivian estimates up to 345 miles on a single charge, which indeed makes it the farthest in the lineup, but only by 15 miles. That all-important Standard model with the attractive $45,000 price ($10,000 less than a base Volvo EX40, and $5,000 less than Tesla Model…
The media company Hearst Magazines, home to titles including Esquire, Cosmopolitan, and Good Housekeeping, unveiled a new platform on Tuesday, called Aura IQ, that combines artificial intelligence with its first-party data to automate audience-building and campaign planning. The platform is built on top of a preexisting product, an audience-targeting solution called Aura, which Hearst Magazines launched in June 2024. That offering used contextual signals to build 30 distinct personas, called Auras, which the company would use as the basis for brand campaigns. Today, Hearst Magazines uses Aura in one in every three of its campaigns. With Aura IQ, which has launched internally…
Here’s one metric for tracking SpaceX’s IPO later this week: The company has changed the venture industry’s perspective on long-term, capital-intensive space so much that a talented founder with no space experience can fund a space data center company. Orbital, a new firm that emerged in May from a16z’s startup accelerator program Speedrun with a $5 million seed round, is the latest company promising to do inference in space — just as soon as Starship is flying regularly. Other investors include Basis Set, Human Element, Wayfinder, Antler, Anti Fund, Ascent, Rubik, Zero Knowledge Ventures, LYVC, Feld Ventures, New Legacy, FNDR,…
Activists in San Francisco’s Mission District weren’t giving up easily. David Campos had taken the baton from Chris Daly as the city Supervisor leading the anti-gentrification advocates, who were anchored in a handful of nonprofit community groups. During the springtime festivities for Cinco de Mayo in 2015, Campos called for a moratorium on all new housing construction in the Mission, saying it was the only way to give the district “a fighting chance.”The idea that new apartment buildings would push rents higher was—and is—a source of endless exasperation for housing advocates. Scott Wiener, who’d taken a more centrist path than…

Have you ever used the Image Playground app on your iPhone? Probably not — and you might not even know that your phone has a built-in AI image-generation tool. That’s because until now, Image Playground has kind of sucked, generating AI imagery that simply isn’t as high-quality as what Apple’s competitors can make. At WWDC 2026 on Monday, Apple announced some necessary improvements to Image Playground. While we haven’t yet gotten to use the app, Apple’s presentation makes it seem like the company’s overall AI overhaul will make Apple Intelligence-powered apps, like Image Playground, perform a lot better. One unique feature is a free “moving artwork” functionality. Imagine a static painting where a portion of the art, such as a river or mist over a mountain, is moving slightly. It’s calming and beautiful. At least dozens are available, but I’m not able to add my own. The TCL NXTVISION also features paintings in a slowly moving video format, but the video art on the Ember Artline looks more realistic. In particular, I was blown away by some of the subtle clips, including one scene that shows the sun passing over a mountain range in extreme hi-def.Another unique feature…

Striding into the unknown and lighting the way for the rest of the industry is what defines the ADWEEK 50 of 2026. Apple has leveraged AI to make its visual-scripting tool, Shortcuts, easier to use in iOS 27, in a reveal shown at its WWDC 2026 event. The Shortcuts app was largely built for power users who wanted to automate repetitive tasks, create workflows, or set up multi-app actions. The new version of Shortcuts will instead allow users to write a prompt and simply describe what they want to do. The new feature is powered by Apple Intelligence, which helps to determine what a natural language description means so it can build out the required steps. “While super powerful, the process of…
