ThredUp started working on Direct Listing last year, and launched a closed beta about six months ago. The offering is now an open beta program as the team continues to test and learn.
Brophy said the platform aims to capture more high-value items through Direct Listing. Right now, there’s a price floor of $20 for any item sold this way.
Over the last two years, ThredUp has invested heavily in AI tools to help people navigate its millions of products. Shoppers can upload images or Pinterest boards, and the AI-powered visual search will help surface relevant items.
For Direct Listings, ThredUp has built in additional AI tools to help make the process of listing an item more seamless. There’s a background remover tool that helps the at-home photography look more consistent with the rest of ThredUp’s inventory, as well as pricing recommendations and autofilled categories.
“We’ve combined our marketing scale with AI-powered tools and our operational infrastructure in a way that we believe can make peer-to-peer selling dramatically easier and more trustworthy than it is today for both buyers and sellers,” Brophy said.
